SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption denied Hell, this is a pleasure listening to. Spirit Disease hail down from Finland and they shred out seven tunes of the best straight ahead death METAL I heard in years. Memorable riffs, violent leads, dragging melodies, a typical throat cancer type of voice with a strong personality, pounding rhythms that seldom reach the border of hyperspeed but always blow your mind without an end, that's what dreams are made of. The icing on the cake is that insane coverversion of Death's 1987 monster hit "Evil Dead", where this band goes totally nutz. They crank it up a bit, push up the speed a bit just to the limit and then blast it in your face. This is surely the song that will stick out with the first listening but you would not do this band right saying it is the best tune here for every song kicks major ass. Technically solid playing is guaranteed all the time, a pure metallic feel pours out of these dirty rotten anthems of extreme metal which sound like a bastard son of swedish and florida deathmetal from the mid 80s to early 90s. Beware of the plague, you know the name!

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Nyt tullaan nurkan takaa ja lujaa. Spirit Diseasen nimisen rähinäremmin seitsemän biisin MCD ei ehkä ole pituudella pilattu, mutta laatu ei ennenkään ole korvannut määrää. Vaikka kyseessä on suht nuoren orkesterin debyyttituotos, löytyy musikanttien takaa paljon aiempaa kokemusta tiukan metallin soitossa ja sen kuulee sokeakin otsallaan. Spirit Diseasen tyylilajina on aggressiivinen metalli, joka on saanut vaikutteensa niin death kuin thrash metallistakin ja onpa mukana hitunen grindiä ja jopa black metallia. Näistä on saatu kasaan erittäin mallikkaasti kulkevaa armotonta turpasaunaa, jonka intensiteettiä voi helposti verrata Impaled Nazareneen. Kuka tahansa osaa kaahata päättömästi, mutta tarkoitukselleni kaahaus yhdistettynä tarttuviin koukkuihin ja kykyyn himmailla tarvittaessa vaatii sovitustaitoa. Tätä orkesterilta löytyy samoin kun valjastaa brutaalius palvelemaan omia tarkoitusperiä menettämättä tippaakaan alkukantaista voimaa. Vaikka muutama levyn raidoista ei aivan täydellinen napakymppi olekaan, ovat nekin helposti parempia kuin mihin monet saman genret orkesterit koskaan kykenevät. Levyn päättävään Death lainaan Evil Dead on onnistuttu puhkumaan niin paljon energiaa, että tältä se varmasti olisi uulostanut jos Chuck olisi elossa vuonna 2004 ja vasta nyt julkaisemassa Scream Bloody Gorea. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions No nyt tullaan vesuri tanassa suoraan päälle. Vasta pari vuotta kasassa ollut mutta vanhoista parroista (miehistö tuttua bändeistä Evemaster, Scum jne.) kasattu Spirit Disease keuhkoaa alkuvoimainen thrash ja rivo death aseinaan siihen malliin, että meinaa tässä iltamallas tulla rinnuksille. Samaan syssyyn ryöppyää koko menneen viikon ruokavalio, lenkkeineen päivineen. Minicd:n seitsemän ysköstä röyhtäistään kuulijan niskaan armoa tuntematta ja ylimielisesti hymyillen. Ja on siihen hymyyn aihettakin, tämä kun uhkaa olla parasta lajinsa melua Suomesta pitkään aikaan. Tässäpä ryhmä, joka saattaisi potkia Luttisen ryhmänkin eläkkeelle. Tsekatkaa nyt helvetissä. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Uuden suomalaisen levy-yhtiön Vortex Motionsin pelinavaus on vakuuttava. Spirit Disease on monissa kiljupöntöissä keitettyjen metalliveteraanien kokoonpano, joka rynnii ennakkoluulottomasti eteenpäin ilman armon häivää. Redemption Denied on tyly kattaus tämän päivän aggressiivista ja brutaalia metallia, joka toisaalta yhdistelee luontevasti osasia alalajeista kuten thrash, death, grind ja black, mutta toisaalta osoittaa Death-lainalla Evil Dead juuriensa olevan syvällä rankkuuden ytimessä. Spirit Diseasessa ensimmäisenä iskee kasvoille bändin jumalaton intensiteetti. Bändi murjoo otsa kurtussa, mutta ei kuitenkaan niin lujaa, että verisuonet poksahtelisivat otsalohkoissa. Redemption Denied nimittäin rullaa sujuvasti ja kitkatta melodioiden, blast beatien ja kitarasoolojen loksahdellessa vaivatta paikoilleen. Näissä lyhyissä aggroveisuissa ei ole mitään turhaa, vaan bändi osaa sanoa kaiken oleellisen plus/miinus kolmessa minuutissa. Spirit Disease on ottanut ensimmäisen askeleen matkallaan, ja tuo askel on väkevä ja varma. Redemption Denied kuitenkin kätkee epäilyksen; pystyykö bändi mahdollisella täyspitkällä pitämään mielenkiintoa yllä - nytkin yhtyeen hengästyttävä meno meinaa puuduttaa levyn loppupuolella. Tätä on kuitenkin turha enempää spekuloida. Elä tänään, kuole huomenna - Spirit Disease on kuitenkin se orkesteri, joka iskee viimeiset naulat arkkuusi. (Review by Antti Klemi, 25.10.2004)

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease kuuluu siihen ryhmään bändejä, jotka ovat onnistuneet hyppäämään silmille aivan yllättäen nurkan takaa ilman minkäänlaisia odotuksia. Kuulin yhtyeestä ensimmäistä kertaa Evemasterin yhteydessä, mutta pian selvisi kyseessä olevan 2002 loppupuolella perustetun yhtyeen, jonka jäsenien taustoilta löytyy puolituttuja bändejä. Jos yhtyeen pohjimmaisesta ideasta alkaa luomaan mielikuvaa niille, jotka eivät bändiä tunne lainkaan, niin sanoisin reseptin koostuvan death-, grind-, black- ja thrash-metallisista elementeistä ja jos bändin vaikuttimia katselee, niin en uskoisi bändien Death, Celtic Frost, Entombed, At The Gates, Carcass, Kreator, Napalm Death, Slayer ja Morbid Angel vievän ketään kovin kauaksi totuudesta, kunhan ei luo aivan järjettömiä kuvitelmia tuolta pohjalta. Tärkeintä on kuitenkin tämän levyn sisältö, joka on paljon teoriaa ja tarua ihmeellisempää. Redemption Denied on siis Spirit Diseasen ensimmäinen varsinainen albumi ja tämä vajaan 18 minuutin mittainen minilevy on samalla Vortex Motions Recordsin ensimmäinen julkaisu. Lyhyessä ajassa ehtii kuitenkin tapahtumaan vaikka mitä, sillä mukaan mahtuu kuusi bändin omaa kappaletta ja vielä Scream Bloody Goren aikaisen Death-kappaleen coverointi. Spirit Diseasen oma musiikin tyyli tuli kuvailtua aiemmin, mutta sen laatu onkin sitten kaikin puolin loisteliasta luokkaa. Albumin käynnistyessä Everyone Must Die katkoo selkärangan ja helpotusta ei tule, sillä Sadistic Belated Abortion ja Tormented And Pain takovat monilla riffeillään ja melodioillaan sellaista materiaalia tajuntaan, että ensimmäisillä kuunteluilla ei meinannut saada sanaa sanottua. Parisekuntinen Horse johdattaa intensiivistä materiaalia kohti Redemption Denied-nimiraitaa ja viimein hienosti The Extiction of Subhuman Kindiin ja kun tähän hakataan päälle vielä laadukas Evil Dead-coveri, en voi enää valittaa. Joku voisi helposti hakata Spirit Diseasen arkkuun välittömästi ikävän perusmetallin naulan, mutta tätä väitettä en allekirjoita millään tavalla. Jo aiemmin mainitsemani genrehybridi on omiaan kuvaamaan sitä, miten yhtyeen aggressiivinen musiikki on yhtä aikaa jotakin tuttua, mutta samalla uutta monestakin eri syystä. Kappaleiden ollessa vahvaa jälkeä, löytyy niiden toteutuksestakin erinomaisia hyveitä. Tämän kaiken voi tiivistää äärimmäisen antaumukselliseen ja intensiiviseen soitantaan, joka on juuri niin tarkkaa ja laadukasta runttausta, ettei mielenterveyden järkkymistä voi olla epäilemättä. Tämä tiivistyy tappavan soitannan lisäksi juuri Jarno Taskulan raivokkaisiin monia tyylejä yhdisteleviin vokalisointeihin, jotka ovat olleet laatua jo Evemasterissa, mutta nousevat tällä kertaa aivan uudelle asteelle, tuoden mieleen hetkittäin esimerkiksi Fenrizin ja Ihsahnin. Jos jonkinlaista kehua pitää vielä jakaa, niin soundivalinnat ovat onnistuneet yhdistellessään rosoisuutta ja selkeyttä, joka tekee metallisuudesta juuri niin potkivan, kuin vain suinkin on tarpeellista. Redemption Denied on kaikin puolin erittäin onnistunut lähtölaukaus Spirit Diseasen uralle, jolta toivon jatkossa jotakin todella laadukasta. Näin lyhytsoiton tapauksessa runttaava materiaali toimii monivaiheisuudessaan hienosti kaikin puolin aina riffeistä melodioihin ja leadeihin, mutta tästä huolimatta juuri lyhytsoiton formaatti oli tällä kertaa ehdottomasti oikea ratkaisu. Tällaisenaan materiaali ei nimittäin lähde luisumaan puuduttavaksi millään tavalla, mutta jos pituutta lisäisi 30-40 minuuttiin, saattaisi tilanne olla aivan toisenlainen. Tämän takia Spirit Disease kaipaa ehkä jatkossa hieman lisää tyylittelyjä musiikkiinsa, johon voisi sopia aivan hyvin myös sopivalla maulla käytetyt äärimmäisen raskaat hitaampien tempojen käytöt. Kovin paljoa tästä ei tarvitse edetä, ennen kuin kokopitkän tarpeet on täytetty, mutta sitä ennen Redemption Denied tulee soimaan paljon. (review by Aki Nuopponen, 27.10.2004)

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Metallimaailman kartta alkaa olla pullollaan jos jonkin näköistä yrittäjää ja välillä tuntuu, että tuubaa sekaan mahtuu ihan liikaakin. Kuitenkin lappeenrantalainen Spirit Disease tekee tyylikkään debyytin ja samalla levyn julkaiseva – tähän asti lähinnä postimyynnistään tunnettu – Vortex Emotions tekee oman debyyttinsä levy-yhtiönä. Spirit Disease koostuu useista metallin saralla monenlaista kokeneesta konkarista ja se myös soitannassa positiivisena seikkana kuuluu. Bändi tietää mitä on tekemässä ja tekee sen tyylitietoisesti ja varmasti. Perusrungoltaan death metalliin suuntautuvat kappaleet ovat voimakkaita ja ruhjovia, mutta sekaan mahtuu pientä tuoksua mustemmastakin metallista, sekä jonkin verran melodioita. Jälkimmäistä elementtiä karttavien on kuitenkaan turha saada suurempia allergiareaktioita, sillä Göteborgin suuntaan ei juurikaan kumarreta kuin korkeintaan hyvin lievinä At The Gatesin tyylisinä mausteina. Loppupäästä levyä löytyy myös yksi kiinnostava cover-vetokin, sillä päätöskappaleeksi on täräytetty – ei enempää eikä vähempää – Deathin klassinen Evil Dead. Biisi potkii kuin sonni aitauksessaan, eikä Schuldinerin tarvinne haudassaan kääntyä. Redemption Denied on laadukas pelinavaus ja ihan hyvä juuri tällaisessa muodossa. Kokonaisen levyn mittaa ihan pelkällä tämäntyyppisellä sata lasissa –meiningillä ei välttämättä jaksaisi, elleivät kappaleet ole poikkeuksellisen vahvoja ja sellaisia levyjä en itse tiedä onnistuneesti tehdyn kuin muutamia. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Vasta parivuotias Spirit Disease on noussut kotoisen hevikansan tietoituuteen hyvin ripeästi, mistä saammekin kiittää tehokasta promootiota. Tämä Etelä-Suomen verisiltä kujilta ponnistava orkesteri on nuoresta iästään huolimatta täynnä kokeneita muusikoita, joista nimekkäin on Evemasterissakin vaikuttava vokalisti Taskula. Redemption Denied on orkesterin ensimmäinen virallinen tuotos, jota tituleerataan MCD:ksi, vaikkakin se tuntuu pitävän sisällään materiaalia aina täyspitkäksi asti. Spirit Disease mättää ensiteoksellaan tehokkaasti, eikä se jätä sanomaansa epäselväksi, sillä jo ensimmäisellä biisillä julistetaan kuinka kaikkien täytyy kuolla. Bändi niittää kuolonthrashillaan tehokkaan tarkasti; miesten aikaisempi kokemus brutaalin musiikin saralla on edukseen. Erityisesti bändistä erottuvat omaperäisesti ääntään käyttävä Taskula sekä varsin pätevä rumpali Mattila. Niin hyvin kuin bändi hoitaakin mättämispuolen, niin juuri mihinkään muuhun siitä ei tunnu olevan. Spirit Disease noudattaa genrensä klassisia kaavoja, eikä se tunnu tuovan musiikkinsaa mitään uutta tai omaperäistä. Ehkä se ei ole tarkoituskaan, mutta ainakin minä henkilökohtaisesti kaipaisin levylle jonkinlaisia nyansseja, jotka erottaisivat poppoon muusta harmaana lilluvasta massasta. Kotimaisuus lasketaan tässä tapauksessa hyveeksi, mutta ei sekään kovin pitkälle jaksa kantaa, sillä orkesterin kaikki ideat tunnutaan käyttävän loppuun heti ensimmäisen biisin aikana, eikä kiekon muista kappaleista siten jaksa enää innostua. Redemption Denied on ihan kiva mättöpala, mutta ei siitä oikein pitkäikäiseen käyttöön ole.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions/Two Fat Men Dieses finnische Quintett spielt einen sehr feinen old school Deathrash und diese EP ist der offizielle Business Einstand für SPIRIT DISEASE, nachdem man zuvor bereits schon ein "Online Demo" zum Gratis Download angeboten hatte. Die sieben Titel auf "Redemption Denied" (inklusive einer guten DEATH "Evil Dead" Coverversion!) bieten größtenteils schnellen, brutalen Deathrash der amerikanischen Schule a la SLAYER (besonders in den Gitarrensolos!),DEATH, POSSESSED oder MORBID ANGEL und werden zudem sehr ungestüm durch die Boxen geprügelt, was sich herrlich traditionell anhört (als der gute alte Analogsound noch Usus war!). Von den sechs Eigengewächsen ist mir mit "Torment and Pain" ein Stück ganz besonders ans Herz gewachsen: Wenn die Jungs auf diesem Niveau weitermachen (schließlich ist "Redemption Denied" nichts anderes als das offiziell veröffentlichte zweite Demo der Band), hat Dänemark demnächst eine saustarke Thrashband mehr im Aufgebot der guten Bands! SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Records Release: 18.04.2005 Label: Vortex Motion Records Stil: Death Metal Everyone Must Die Sadistic Belated Abortion Torment And Pain Horse (Xim Esrepnarouh) Redemption Denied The Extinction Of Subhuman Kind Evil Dead SPIRIT DISEASE wurden 2002 in Finnland gegründet und haben sich von Anfang an dem thrashigen Death Metal gewidmet. Ein Jahr nach der Bandentstehung hat man bereist erstes Demo-Material ins Netz gestellt und wiederum ein Jahr später eine Demo-CD namens "Redemption Denied" erstellt. Mit Vortex Motion Records hat die Band schließlich einen guten Handelspartner für den Vertrieb gefunden und dieses Demo nochmals als Mini-CD veröffentlicht, nun jedoch für den gesamten europäischen Markt. Musikalisch orientieren sich SPIRIT DISEASE vor allem an THE CROWN, was ich an der beinahe gleichen Rifftechnik festmache, wobei jedoch gesagt werden muss, dass diese Finnen bei weitem noch nicht auf dem Level der leider zu Grabe getragenen Kollegen aus Schweden unterwegs sind. Dafür fehlen der Band zwischendurch immer wieder die zündenden Ideen, welche zudem eine eigene Identität heraushören lassen könnten. Daran hapert es jedoch noch, und wenn man der Band jetzt an den Karren pinkeln wollte, könnte man behaupten, sie würde lediglich Bekanntes neu aufgreifen. Aber das möchte ich in dieser Rezension gar nicht, denn zweifelsohne haben SPIRIT DISEASE Talent und ein Gespür für gute Riffs. Guten Geschmack beweisen sie übrigens auch in Form des DEATH-Covers 'Evil Dead', welches mir in dieser Version ähnlich gut gefällt wie die Variante von GOD DETHRONED. Das eigene Material steht dem im Grunde genommen in nichts nach, nur dass man das Tempo vielleicht öfter hätte variieren können wie beispielsweise bei 'Torment And Pain'. Daran und natürlich an einem eigenständigen Sound sollte man noch arbeiten; die Anlagen sind hingegen schon allesamt vorhanden und deshalb sollten speziell Fans von THE CROWN hier ruhig mal ein Ohr riskieren. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Manchmal fehlen mir einfach die Worte, wenn ich einer Band zuhören muss, die zwar spielen kann, aber kompositorisch eine reine Niete ist. Man hofft zwar irgendwo noch was Nettes zu hören, was die Stimmung aufhellen könnte, aber leider ist das nur allzu selten der Fall. So ist dies auch bei den Finnen Spirit Disease der Fall, die kräftig ihre Instrumente malträtieren und alles unerdenklich mögliche aus ihnen herauszuholen versuchen, aber nichts Gescheites dabei herausbringen. „Redemption Denied“ ist Death-Material Material, welches man schon bei anderen Bands ohne Plattenvertrag gehört hat und hier verkauft werden will. Ob sich da auch wer finden wird, der zuschlägt, ist fraglich. Denn dazu fehlt hier einfach die Innovativität, das Gespür für Musik im Ganzen und die Arrangements, die wenigstens vermitteln, dass die Band eine Ahnung von Songstrukturen hat. Schon der erste Song verursacht bei mir nur Kopfschmerzen und hinterläßt im Endeffekt nur Fragezeichen. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Tormentor Erich: "EVERYONE MUST DIE!!!!!". Batter, batter, batter, thrash, thrash, thrash, death, death, death, a piece of grindcore, everything once more and finished. That was the first song. No time to take a breath, we immediately continue with song number two 'Sadistic Belated Abortion' in the same "we will bash our songs through your throat" style. Song number three 'Torment And Pain': batter, thrash, death... A slow part? A groovy riff? A keen solo? Hmm, nice, oh, we continue again: batter, grindcore, death. Finished. Well my dear reader, you will understand that this mini album by the Finnish Spirit Disease is only set apart for the hardest metalheads amongst us. And don't get me wrong, this CD turns out to be very pleasant. The mixture of thrash, death and grindcore does the trick. Spirit Disease knows what they are doing and they do not get overworked, or just bash along. It may take one or two listening sessions to discover the line of the songs (the moderate production is also debit to this) but if you pay attention you can hear development in the songs. Because of this 'Redemption Denied' does not get boring. Those of you who listen to bands such as Napalm Death, Divine Empire and Impaled Nazarene should give it a try for sure. For the sake of completeness I like to mention that song number four: 'Horse (Xim Esrepnarouh)' has a playing time of some seconds only (or something went wrong with my copy of the CD). The title track and 'The Extinction Of Subhuman Kind' keep the level high and the last one, 'Evil Dead', turns out to be a great cover of the Death classic. This cover song is sharp, filthy and hard, and that is the way it should be. Rating: 80/100 --- Tormentor Erich: "EVERYONE MUST DIE!!!!!!". Ram, ram, ram, thrash, thrash, thrash, death, death death, stukje grindcore, alles nog en keer en klaar. Dat was de eerste song. Geen adempauze, gelijk verder met 'Sadistic Belated Abortion' in dezelfde 'we knallen onze songs wel eens even door je strot' stijl. Song nummer drie dan 'Torment And Pain': ram, thrash, death... Een stukje gas terug? Een groovy loopje? Een aardige solo? Hmm, leuk, och, we gaan weer verder: ram, grindcore, death. Klaar. Wel beste lezer, u zult begrijpen dat deze mini van het Finse Spirit Disease allen voor de hardste onder ons is bestemd. En begrijp me niet verkeerd, het is een heel aardig werkje geworden. De mix van thrash, death en een beetje grindcore zit goed in elkaar. Er wordt niet als een kip zonder kop doorgerend, men weet wel degelijk waar men mee bezig is. Dit komt door al het geraas misschien niet gelijk tot uiting, (de matige productie doet ook een duit in het zakje), maar als je goed oplet dan hoor je dat steeds vaker terugkomen. Hierdoor gaat 'Redemption Denied' ook niet snel vervelen. Degene onder ons die wel wat kan met Napalm Death, Devine Empire en Impaled Nazarene mogen best eventjes de oortjes de kost geven. Voor de volledigheid kan ik ook nog vermelden dat song nummer vier, 'Horse (Xim Esrepnarouh)', een nummer is van enkele seconden (of er is iets misgegaan met mijn kopietje). Dat het titelnummer en 'The Extinction Of Subhuman Kind' niet onderdoen voor de overige tracks en dat de afsluiter 'Evil Dead' (uiteraard van Death) een prima cover is geworden. Deze cover is fel, smerig en hard, en zo moet het. Score: 80/100

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions "Het land van 1000 meren", zo wordt Finland in de volksmond ook wel eens genoemd. En hoewel het klimaat hedendaags een drastische verandering ondergaat, evenals de economie, die een potentiele bedreiging voor het natuurschoon in de hoge Noorden vormt, worden bepaalde meren juist alsmaar dieper, donkerder, vervaarlijker. De deathmetalmeren. Het Finse meer dat Spirit Disease heet heeft haar wateren in 2002 geclaimd en sindsdien is het de drukte van belang op de bewuste oevers. In 2003 waagde Spirit Disease het op een demo en anno 2004 kwam de EP "Redemption Denied" uit de kolkende wateren van het Spirit Disease-meer gerezen. Dit meer is dan ook slechts voor gevorderden zwemmers toegankelijk, dus ge zijt bij voorbaat al gewaarschuwd! Spirit Disease legt zich met "Redemption Denied" voornamelijk toe op de basiselementen van grind, death en thrash. Men neme dus felheid, snelheid, agressie, onweerlegbare krachten en wervelende solo`s en het resultaat is een stekelige klis energie, voorzien van een bijna loepzuiver geluid met een stalen frame. Snelheid staat centraal op deze EP van het Finse heerschap. De 7 nummers worden in een moordend tempo en vrijwel zonder introductie ( op het nummers "Torment With Pain" en "Evil Dead" -juist ja, van Death - na) in de 18 minuten speeltijd gepast waardoor "Redemption Denied" zich als een onmiskenbare, slurpende, trekkende en zuigende draaikolk ontpopt die elke levende cel moeiteloos naar de troebele onderregionen van de diepe wateren sleurt als het potentieel slachtoffer even niet oplet. Deze EP overmant en overrompelt met gemak en loopt een ieder moeiteloos ondersteboven. Toch wordt "Redemption Denied" op den duur weinig verrassend. Ieder nummer is op een bijna identieke manier opgebouwd waardoor je al gauw feilloos kunt raden wat er nu gaat komen en gaan. Bijna ieder nummer bestaat uit een felle start met ergens halverwege het nummer een kleine adempauze waarin het tempo iets omlaag gaat, waarna het nummer wederom op volle vaart wordt voltooid/uitgekotst/weggewuifd. Dit alles gaat gepaard met een overvloedige aanwezigheid van gierende gitaren en schor krijsende vocalen, die vanaf de titeltrack "Redemption Denied" bijval vinden van een zwaardere aanverwant die zich zowaar als een vette grunt voordoet. Al met al wint de voortknuppelende en schuimende energie het wat mij betreft van de dreiging der eentonigheid en is "Redemption Denied" een uitstekende voorproef op een hopenlijk binnenkort te verwachten full-length. De beste schijf is vooral uitermate geschikt voor mensen die de vroege ochtend wel eens dreigen te verzuimen in het voordeel van het warme nest. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions "Never judge a book by its cover, weet je", dat dit een citaat van het voluptueuze leeghoofd Georgina Verbaan is, doet niets af aan het hoge waarheid-als-een-koe-gehalte van het gezegde. En inderdaad, de MCD 'Redemption Denied' van Spirit Disease mag dan wel op een gebrand CDR'tje en in een aftands, in elkaar geplakt hoesje zijn toegestuurd, muzikaal hebben deze Finnen hun zaakjes uitstekend voor mekaar. De felle, opgefokte mix van death, black en thrash metal, die goed te vergelijken is met Hypocrisy, wordt in de zeventien minuten, die deze MCD telt, ontzettend strak en doeltreffend neergezet. Ook geluidstechnisch komt de zeurpiet van een koude kermis thuis en klinkt 'Redemption Denied' even glashelder als knallend. 80

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Shred Metal und kein Ende – auch auf die Gefahr hin, daß uns die Freunde von den zwei fetten Männern fürderhin nicht mehr bemustern, aber sie haben dort schon ein Händchen für die Verpflichtung von nichtssagenden ärgerlichen Bands, welche völlig unzumutbare Veröffentlichungen – und zwar vom Songwriting und vom Sound her – unters Volk bringen. Wobei ich den Finnen SPIRIT DISEASE jetzt ein klein wenig unrecht tue, denn – im Gegensatz zu ihren Labelkollegen PREJUDICE – scheinen sie zumindest in gewisser Weise talentiert zu sein, obgleich dieser Trumpf auf dem vorliegenden Mini-Album noch nicht ausgespielt wird. Auf „Redemption Denied“ sind jedenfalls wenigstens ansatzweise so etwas wie Strukturen, Riffs und ein gewisser Sinn in den Tracks zu erkennen. Leider bleibt objektiv bei einem vollkommen in die Hose gegangenen Sound und diesem unterm Strich uninspirierten und als Schnellschuß zu den Akten zu legenden Mini-Album nichts übrig, was man irgendwie als positiv zu bewerten hätte. Im Zeitalter von Myriaden brillianter Veröffentlichungen ist dies einfach zu wenig, wenn ich auch SPIRIT DISEASE zugute halten muß, daß sie in gewisser Weise „ihr Ding“ durchziehen, was ein gewisses Quantum an Achtung erheischt. Vielleicht hätten sie einfach noch ein Weilchen warten sollen, um ein komplettes Album in Ruhe und mit einem akzeptablen Sound einzuspielen. So bleiben leider nicht mehr als 4 ½ Punkte übrig für eine Veröffentlichung, die nun wirklich ÜBERHAUPT NIEMAND braucht. Zweinhalb der viereinhalb Punkte kommen vom letzten Stück, ‚Evil Dead’, welches in einer Zwischenpassage ein utrageiles Thema zitiert (TV-Serie Twilight Zone“), wie wir es alle aus ENTOMBED – ‚Left Hand Path’ und von der gottgleichen ersten EP von BLOODBATH kennen. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions This is the debut album of this Finnish band featuring vocalist Jarno Taskula (of Evemaster) in their ranks. The mini CD features 7 songs of thrash and death metal that are not bad at all. They are a solid band and I liked their sound a lot, although they still need to work more on the arrangements and definitely more on the production of the their music, since it is not very good. It’s a pity because their music is not bad at all, the vocals are very good and the musicianship at a good level. They are one of those bands that you know they have to ability to get out of the underground and come up with a good record. Maybe what we hear on this mini CD is the beginning of a great band, but it all comes down to the question of if they are willing to work really hard to improve. I hope they are because they have the potential for good things.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Wie unser Tyrann, der gute GT, bereits beim Verteilen dieser Promo anmerkte, sieht nicht nur das Logo von SPIRIT DISEASE verdächtig nach MALEVOLENT CREATION aus. Recht hat er, denn auch die Musik die man auf der mit „Redemption Denied“ betitelten Mini CD geboten bekommt orientiert sich an den Amis. Amerikanischer Death Metal mit leichten Thrash Einflüssen umschreibt das, was man hier geboten bekommt sehr passend. Meist recht fixe Songs, böses, angepisstes Gebrülle und fiese, aber leider altbekannte Riffs und Songstrukturen. SPIRIT DISEASE verstehen ihr Handwerk und liefern uns nicht mal 20 Minuten voller Aggression. Die sieben vertretenen Abrissbirnen fetzen allesamt gut nach vorne los, aber irgendwie springt bei aller erzeugten Reibungswärme nie wirklich der Funken über. Wer schon länger mit Thrash Metal der Bay Area und amerikanischem Death Metal vertraut ist, der wird hier nichts finden, was er noch nicht irgendwo schon mal gehört hat. Somit kann ich dem wirklich passablen Einstand der Band trotz guter Darbietung und generell ordentlichen Songs nur eine solide Leistung bescheinigen. Aber da auch soundmäßig alles am rechten Fleck ist und ansonsten ebenfalls keine weiteren Makel zu erkennen sind, ist „Redemption Denied“ durchaus für ne starke viertel Stunde Spaß gut, gerade weil man den fünf Mannen anhört, dass sie es wirklich geil finden diese Musik zu spielen.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Als de term 'klassieke deathmetal' zou bestaan dan is deze zeker van toepassing op het Finse Spirit Disease. Laag gestemde gitaren, heldere productie waarbij de vette dubbele bassdrums hun werk kunnen doen, pakkende gitaar riffs en een zanger die in de lokale steengroeve de stenen met zijn strot tot gruis verpulvert. Overduidelijk vormt "Redemption Denied" een eerbetoon aan de beginjaren van de deathmetal met als ultieme genotsfactor de echte gitaarsolo's die de gitaristen produceren. Beter dan het gebruikelijke gepiep en gescheur wat vaak toegepast wordt. De korte nummers zitten goed in elkaar en worden soms met wat blastbeats opgesmukt. Volgens de bio is het juist de bedoeling om als een klassieke deathmetal band te klinken en in dat opzicht is het 'missie geslaagd'. Beste nummers zijn "Torment And Pain" en "The Extinction Of The Subhuman Kind" omdat hierin de terugkeer naar de roots het beste tot uiting komt. Als extraatje staat er nog de cover "Evil Dead" van Death op en het is opmerkelijk om te constateren dat dit naadloos aansluit bij de andere tracks. Deathmetal fans die nog eens een keertje van de goeie ouwe tijd willen proeven mogen zich een luisterbeurtje van Spirit Disease niet onthouden.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease is een relatief nieuwe band uit Finland, opgericht door een oude vriendenkring van muzikanten. Op deze mini-cd Redemption Denied presenteert deze groep hun death-thrashmetal voor het eerst aan een internationaal publiek. Over de muziek kan ik kort zijn: rappe thrash- en deathmetal die het midden houdt tussen Kreator en God Dethroned, aangevuld met moderne Scandinavische thrash-elementen. Muzikaal zit het wel snor met Spirit Disease, hoewel drummer Matilla zich nog wel eens verslikt in de breaks en blasts. Het manco met deze cd zit hem in het gebrek aan originalitieit of echt memorabele nummers. Nou ja, er staat er wél één op, maar hier speelt de band de Death-cover Evil Dead. Hierbij vraag ik me weer eens af waarom bands nooit een nummer van een latere Death-plaat coveren. Echter past het nummer wel in Spirit Diseases' straatje en is het een aardige afsluiter. Helaas is het eigen werk nog niet van het niveau dat 'de echte groten' (de eerder genoemde bands) wel halen. Bovendien zijn titels als Torment And Pain of Everyone Must Die van een bedenkelijk allooi. Grinduitspatting Horse van 3 seconden duurt mij ook echt 3 seconden te lang, dat deed Brutal Truth veel leuker. Het is duidelijk te horen dat Spirit Disease plezier heeft in wat ze doen, maar ze zouden zich in het vervolg wat meer bezig mogen houden met de zoektocht naar een eigen gezicht. Indien de band dit niet van plan is, zal ik ze succes willen wensen in de 'eeuwige middenmoot.'

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease aus Finnland spielen eine Mischung aus Death und Thrash Metal, garniert mit ein wenig Grindcore. Die Jungs gehören eher zu der Fraktion, die einfach straight ahead spielt, ohne Verluste und ohne jemals das Tempo drosseln zu wollen. Der Sänger kann nicht im Takt singen und stimmliche Variationen halten Spirit Disease wahrscheinlich für unnötig. Mir fehlt es hier eigentlich an allem. Da wären die Songs, die einfach keine interessanten Momente bieten. Auch wenn die Musiker technisch recht fit zu sein scheinen, interessante Songs zu schreiben ist definitiv nicht deren Stärke. „Redemption Denied“ ist mir einfach zu monoton und mit Sicherheit nichts, daß mir mein Geld wert wäre. They have a strong Death Metal sound, but the Thrash Metal elements are clearly present through out. They have a really cool crunchy almost Grindcore vibe shooting straight through their sound. At times there are some good grooving riffs that pull you in. The vocals are a harsh throaty Black Metal & Thrash Metal crossover style. These guys are very good & I'd really like to hear more from them in the future!!!

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Zwar gibt es diese finnische Band erst seit 2002, dafür zelebriert der Fünfer aber sehr oldschooligen Death/Thrash, wie er uns einst von Werken solch namhafter Bands wie POSSESSED, ENTOMBED oder auch ASPHYX um die Ohrwascheln knallte. Durch die perfektere Spielweise kommen einem immer wieder GOD DETHRONED in den Sinn, was das gute Erscheinungsbild noch verfeinert. Also nichts Neues, aber sehr gut arrangiert und eiskalt runtergezockt. Der Blut und Galle spuckende Sänger, der zusätzlich die dicken Saiten malträtiert, kreischt sich Van Drunen-like durch sämtliche sieben Siegel des Todes, wobei Nummero Quattro („Horse (Xim Esrepnarouh)“) entweder eine Verarsche oder einfach nur ein „angebrannter“ Song auf dem mir vorliegenden Billigrohling sein soll. Jedenfalls hört man nur einen infernalischen Schrei, der abrupt endet. Zusammen macht man keine Gefangene und schwartet munter sterbend drauf los, schwingt dabei kräftig die Peitsche und zollt beim Durchtreten des siebten Siegels den guten alten DEATH musikalischen Tribut. Zwar erreicht keiner der auf dieser EP enthaltenen Stücke die 4min-Marke, aber wer braucht das schon bei dieser Mucke? Nach dem Demo von 2003 und dieser EP bin ich aber heiß auf mehr geworden und erwarte möglichst bald ein Langspielwerk!

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Die Finnen von Spirit Disease haben sich 2002 gegründet und 2003 ihr erstes Demo als online-Release veröffentlicht. 2004 folgte dann, ebenfalls als Demo, „Redemption Denied“, das nun mit entsprechendem Vertrieb auch hier als Mini-CD erhältlich ist. Die sieben Tracks sind purer thrashiger Death, weisen eine hohe Spielfreude und reichlich Tempo auf. Berücksichtigt man die noch recht kurze Schaffensphase der Jungs, möchte man ihnen noch eine gute Entwicklung zutrauen. An Talent mangelt es zumindest nicht, denn spieltechnisch ist einiges an Potenzial vorhanden. Abwechslung und Breaks sind leider noch Mangelware, so dass an den Songstrukturen noch gearbeitet werden muss. Aber ?Everyone Must Die’ zeigt schon, was in der Band steckt und auch die Death-Cover-Version von ?Evil Dead’ ist gut gelungen. Ebenfalls erfrischend sind die gelungen Übergänge der Stücke, die aber andererseits auch die noch reichlich vorhandene Gleichförmigkeit unterstreichen. Wird an den Schwächen gearbeitet und auf den vorhandenen Stärken aufgebaut, werden wir sicherlich noch einiges von Spirit Disease zu hören bekommen. Somit eine ermutigende Fünf. 5/10 - RB

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Desde el sur de la tierra de los mil lagos nos llega esta banda, que debuta discográficamente con este mini CD, que a decir verdad es su segunda maqueta pero supongo que remasterizada para la ocasión y lanzada bajo este formato por Vortex Motion Records. Nos presentan una colección de temas enmarcables en un peculiar Death Metal con fuertes pinceladas Thrashers, (y, según ellos mismos y su compañía Grindcore, aunque este estilo únicamente puede estar presente en el 4º corte, que es la típica paranoia sonora de 30 segundos de duración); es decir, un Death metal original que se desmarca totalmente de lo que últimamente viene siendo habitual en el género, dándole a cada pista un toque de distinción y haciendo muy amenos los apenas 18 minutos que dura este disco. Los blast beasts no abundan demasiado en este trabajo, podemos hablar más bien de temas cañeros pero más basados en riffs definidos y en doble bombo que en una brutalidad desenfrenada. La voz me ha recordado a cierto registro que emplea el estrellado Dani Filth en los directos, cuando no alcanza los tonos más agudos de los temas o bien necesita tomar un respiro, aunque obviamente en esta banda ese tono está bastante más currado, no resultando tan forzado como la del inglés, (suena extraño pero me ha venido esa referencia). Por otra parte, gran acierto también la inclusión de solos de guitarra en los temas; solos altamente trabajados y logrados, incluso con un feeling muy heavy en algunos momentos, (sin menospreciar el gran trabajo del guitarrista). Asimismo, esta gente hace un uso excelente de la melodía, dentro de lo que es su Death/Thrash pero contando con ella en los momentos precisos, proporcionando ese punto de “subidón” que es lo que les proporciona el atractivo que no tienen muchas otras bandas que se mueven por derroteros parecidos a los suyos. SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease, huh? It would appear this young collective are unafraid to wear their At The Gates influences proudly on their sleeves (for the uninitiated, AtG’s penultimate album was called ‘Terminal Spirit Disease’). From their obviously knowing moniker to the distinctly Lindbergian rasp of vocalist Taskula to the familiar attack of razor-sharp, downtuned meldodic death-thrash riffing, these five Finns set about creating an unholy racket that is clearly in homage to the early Nineties Swedish masters of yore. It has to be said that there isn’t a single second of originality to be found anywhere on ‘Redemption Denied’ yet the whole twenty-five minute affair is carried along by pure adrenalin and piano-wire sharp playing, all wrapped up in a highly impressive production. ‘Everyone Must Die’ kicks proceedings off in fine fashion with its insistent central refrain and blindingly fast blastbeats. In their biography, Spirit Disease claim to take influences from grindcore and in light of their music, this makes a lot of sense. There’s a claustrophobic, frantic atmosphere to this EP – not chaotic, but furious and relentless. No song breaches the four minute barrier and the band generally hit you with force. Whilst a lot of bands in this over-subscribed genre end up coming across as safe, stately and a little twee, Spirit Disease manage to sound genuinely aggressive and violent – a genuine achievement for melodic death/thrash in 2005. I will cleanly admit that this sort of music usually does very little for me and I can quite happily live without albums by Soilwork, God Forbid, Arch Enemy et al in my collection. However, Spirit Disease have made me sit up and take note – by imbuing their sound with a genuine sense of fire and passion (just listen to the driving thrash-heavy verse of ‘Evil Dead’), Spirit Disease have broken free from the restraints of a cluttered, oft-sterile genre. Impressive and certainly ones to watch.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease comes to us by way of Finland, and they seem to be in quite a hurry as they deliver seven songs here in a mere 18 minutes. Sure one song is only four seconds long but the remaining ones are quite short too. They like to deliver very fast thrashy death metal in the vein of the first two albums by The Haunted. They also know how to play like them, as well as like other Swedish shredders. The solo in the first song Everyone Must Die sounds like it came straight out of the Chris Amott playbook. This also has a pretty good bass sound to it which reminds me a little of Cannibal Corpse, though bassist Sallanen isn't in the class of Alex Webster. This is one of the two most obvious old school touches on this album, the other one being a cover of the old Death standard, Evil Dead. The vocals are even very Lindbergh sounding, with just a hint of Mika Luttinen of Impaled Nazarene. This is my only problem with the band however. They do a great job of showing off their myriad Swedish influences, but rarely break away from them in any way. This is good stuff here, but I have heard this many times before. That said this is still promising stuff here and I await future releases with open ears. Now they just need that little extra something to break away from the pack.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions “Redemption Denied” is a seven track MCD from Spirit Disease, that last for almost 18 minutes, but really it’s only 6 songs. It would seem to me that they like the Swedish death sound, even though they hail from Finland. The band is a mix of death, thrash, and grindcore influences, but the vocals are very much like At The Gates. Musically they combine At The Gates, Soilwork, God Dethroned, and Witchery. This disc is filled with great metal riffing…shredding thrash riffs, brutal grindcore riffs, powerful Swedish death riffs and rhythmically heavy brutal death riffs, it’s all there. Tons of fast paced riffs, and blast beats. It would seem that every song has at least one exceptional riff. Also you can’t forget about the sweet solos and captivating leads. Anyway you look at it, “Redemption Denied” is brutal, aggressive, melodic, energetic, and it belongs in your metal collection!

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Finland has been getting a lot of attention as of late. From the palatable blackend polka of Fintroll, the bombastic synth-thrash of Children of Bodom to the girly goth of H.I.M., original music is spawning from the land of a thousand lakes. Enter Spirit Disease. From their Morbid Angel looking logo to the Death cover, Spirit Disease proudly wears their influence on their sleeves. Spirit Disease is melodic European death metal with a heavy dose of thrash sensibilities and a nod to the blasting death metal of the States. Spirit Disease’s mini-album “Redemption Denied” is a splendid seventeen minutes for those looking for might and less masturbatory metal. The track “Torment Denied” is a speeding melodic death piece that sounds like something an inspired Nuclear Assault would have loved to produce. The title track has a black metal background with a hearty riff and an awesome solo while “The Extinction of Subhuman Kind” comes off as Slayer on speed. If “Evil Dead” isn’t the most covered Death track I’ll be damned and I’d be more damned if Spirit Disease’s rendition isn’t the best version I have ever heard. Vocalist Taskula (ex-Evemaster) sounds strikingly similar to Mika Luttinen of Impaled Nazarene, if not much more audible. Basically, if you are a fan of blackend death thrash or bands like Impaled Nazarene, Spirit Disease is for you. “Redemption Denied” is 17 minutes of well produced of inspired metal.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions SPIRIT DISEASE aus Finnland wurden 2002 gegründet und spielen auf Ihrer MCD "Redemption Denied" oldschool Death/Thrash Metal, der auch gewisse Parallelen zu einigen Vertretern der schwedischen Zunft aufweist. So fand ich in manchen Songs Ähnlichkeiten zu den beiden verblichenen Bands THE CROWN und AT THE GATES, aber auch zu den Amis von MALEVOLENT CREATION, allerdings ohne die Genialität eine dieser Combos zu erreichen. Zwar merkt man SPIRIT DISEASE an, dass diese Ihre Instrumente durchaus beherrschen und ein Talent für gute Riffs und sogar das eine oder andere feine Soli einstreuen, aber es fehlt einfach an den zündenden Songideen. Von einer eigenen Identität kann hier ebenfalls nicht gesprochen werden. Meißt werden die Songs wieselflink runtergezockt. Der Sänger keift und kreischt was das Zeug hält. Abgeschlossen wird die MCD von dem DEATH-Coversong "Evil Dead". Leider wurden hierfür keine Credits angegeben. Bezeichnend, dass mir dieser Song am besten auf dieser Platte gefällt. Der Sound geht in Ordnung, ist passend zur Musik ein wenig roh und relativ druckvoll. Kein schlechter Einstieg, die MCD hat durchaus Ihre Momente, aber für die Zukunft erhoffe ich mir mehr auf der Songwriting-Ebene.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease werd opgericht in 2002. De vijf muzikanten kenden elkaar al van allerhande projecten die hieraan voorafgingen. Ingespeeld raken op elkaar was dus geen probleem en alle aandacht ging dan ook naar het songschrijven. Na één jaar kwamen ze al met een demo op de proppen en anno 2005 laten ze hun eerste mini Redemption Denied op het publiek los. Opener Everyone Must Die laat er geen twijfel over bestaan: dit is snelle death metal. En hoe! Superstrakke blastbeats, hartverscheurende riffs die de gitaren doen afzien, solo’s aan honderd per uur, een ongelofelijk brute zang, … je krijgt het allemaal. De technische death van deze Finnen is gewoon überstrak en blaast je uit je stoel. Spirit Disease heeft daarenboven nog een eigen klank die wel typisch death metal is, maar nooit cliché gaat klinken. De hoogtepunten zijn opener Everyone Must Die, titelnummer Redemption Denied en The Extinction Of Subhuman Kind. Dit is één van de beste debuutplaten van de afgelopen jaren. De zeven nummers die een dik kwartier door je speakers vliegen doen je watertanden naar meer. Hier hoor je nog van, want Spirit Disease heeft alles –en meer- in huis om een hele grote naam te worden.

Their music is described as technical death metal with thrash and grindcore influences. I’ve never even heard of this band before and wasn’t familiar with the music at all. The first song starts out pretty wild, with a lot of freaky guitar shit and quite up tempo drum work. I must confess that it only sticks to this first song. Reading the bio, I thought there was something like grindcore involved in the music. However, I did not hear any grind influences with this album. Technical is another great word that does not apply on this band because the only rhythms I can hear are thrashy ones. Personally, I can withstand some thrash at certain times, but Spirit Disease has just overdone it. This isn’t death metal and it isn’t technical. What remains? No nonsense thrash that I’ve heard a dozen times now. There aren’t really noteworthy songs to mention, because they all resemble to each other. The only highlight on this album is the cover song of Death, called Evil Death. What can you expect when buying this? Not much. If you like boring thrash with no feeling and occasionally a death metal riff, then you should consider buying this piece of crap. Else, don’t bother.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Wieder einmal handelt es sich um eine CD aus Finnland. Diesmal gibt es satten old school Thrash/Death Metal, den SPIRIT DISEASE selbst zwar unter anderem als Grind beschreibt, aber für diese Beschreibung finde ich keinen Grund. In den insgesamt sieben Songs, die gerade einmal knappe 18 Minuten Spielzeit ausmachen, spulen die Jungs ein hartes und schnelles Programm ab, das aber leider nur teilweise überzeugen kann. So sind sie zwar zweifelsfrei ihrer Instrumente mächtig, aber irgendwie fehlen mir da zündende Ideen im Songwriting. Der Sänger schreit ins Mikro, während die restlichen Bandmitglieder knüppeln, was das Zeug hält, und auch einige fette Riffs aus dem Ärmel schütteln. Insgesamt klingt die gesamte CD sehr gehetzt, da es permanent schnell weitergeht und die nötige Abwechslung leider links liegen gelassen wird. Etwas wirklich Neues darf auch keiner erwarten, denn es handelt sich zwar um Metal der alten Schule, aber teilweise fallen mir deutliche Parallelen Richtung At The Gates und einigen anderen Bands dieser Schiene auf, aus deren Schatten sie aber nicht heraustreten können. Dafür dass es die Band erst seit 2002 gibt, ist diese CD sicherlich nicht schlecht, aber um aus dem großen Mittelfeld herauszutreten, braucht es da doch noch etwas mehr an Weiterentwicklung. Der Ansatz jedenfalls lässt gut in die Zukunft blicken.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Böser Death Metal aus Finnland, versetzt mit einigen Thrash-Elementen. Eine fette Produktion lässt diese Dampfwalze schön druckvoll und aggressiv aus den Boxen knallen. Das Songwriting dürfte ebenfalls jedem DM-Maniac zusagen. Heftige und schnelle Riffs dominieren die Songs, und die tiefgestimmten Klampfen lassen immer noch genug Platz für einen kräftigen Bass. Lediglich die Drums sind etwas luftarm. Bei vielen Songs wie z.B. 'Torment & Pain' wird die Thrash-Schiene noch stärker betont, was die fünf Jungs streckenweise sogar wie alte Kreator klingen lässt. Auch die Shouts von Taskula erinnern durchaus gelegentlich an Mille aus dem Pott. Was der 4-Sekunden-Kracher 'Horse' zu bedeuten hat, erschließt sich mir leider nicht. Aber für eine Mini-CD bieten SPIRIT DISEASE eine ordentliche Spielzeit von fast einer halben Stunde. Durch die verschiedenen Orientierungen abseits der Death Metal Zentrale dürfte das Album gleichzeitig Thrasher, aber auch Blackies ('Redemption Denied') gleichermaßen ansprechen. Trendige Klassikanbiederungen, die in Finnland so oft üblich sind, sucht man vergeblich. Die wenigen echten Melodien, die aufgefahren werden, erinnern höchstens etwas an die schwedische DISMEMBER-Schiene. Rohe und ehrliche Musik und gutes Futter für die heimische Bangerstube. Über die streckenweise arg infantilen Texte guckt man bei diesen geilen Bratgitarren gerne geflissentlich hinweg...

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Gleich bei den ersten Klängen vom Eröffnungstrack 'Everyone Must Die' ist klar, wo der Hase lang läuft. Old School Death Thrash aus allen Rohren. Die sieben Songs strotzen nur so von fetten Riffs und Dampfwalzensounds. Die fließenden Wechsel vom Geknüppel zu den mehr groovenden Parts gelingen in allen Fällen hervorragend. Da bleiben keine Fragen offen. Ein böser Orkan hat dir die Ohren durchgeblasen und alles ist gut. Wer auf alten Sound - gut produziert - steht kann hier nichts falsch machen. 'Sadistic Belated Abortion', 'Torment In Pain' und 'Evil Dead' könnten gar nicht anders klingen. Nomen est Omen. Amen

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Spirit Disease is some kind of new band in the finnish underground scene even if the band can’t really be regarded as just another newcomer in the scandinavean death / thrash metal scene. Most of the band’s members are for years active in other musical projects and this is something quite obvious at the listen of the seven tracks recorded on this MCD. If you had a bad experience when listening to most of The Haunted copycats records, then «Redemption Denied» is your cure. This is very good straight forward scandinavean thrash metal in the nowadays vein with varied patterns (mainly fast paced), screamed guttural vocals, the whole supported by good musicianship and obvious song-writing abilities. The death metal background is perhaps more obvious than in most of the albums recorded lately in the genre…as witnessed by the very good Chuldiner’s «Evil Dead» cover (as good as the God Dethroned one). Not original but nicely done and very enjoyable.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions The last couple of years were good year for Finland’s music business. A lot of bands made their break through outside of the country. More and more bands are trying to do the same, like Spirit Disease for instance. Spirit Disease was formed in September 2002 by a couple of friends who wanted to return to their roots: making late eighties, early nineties kind of death metal. To bad this didn’t turn out very well. Please let me explain. First I will tell you something about the promo I’ve received. They could have done some more work on this demo CD-R. You could make a nicer print on the CD and a much better cover: this cover looks like my 4 years old nephew made it. But having said that, let’s look at the music then. I’ve read that the music should be something like noisy songs with death metal, thrash and grind core influences. Well, my personal taste of metal is just the same. Let’s see whether the music does come up to my demands “Everyone must die” is the first song on this album. The number starts very fast with a high pitched vocal. The guitars and drum are really fast and freaky; a quite up- tempo death metal song. Not the most original death metal but okay, just okay. Let’s listen to the next song. This song is much slower and now I can hear their trash influences. Still nothing special, it’s all been done before. All the remaining songs aren’t technical, it’s just no-nonsense thrash. There is nothing wrong with it; the only thing that matters is that a lot of bands have done this before already. The fourth number isn’t really a number; all I could hear was noise and some guys screaming “Horse”. Only highlight and really death metal song on this album is the cover from Death. It’s a good cover of “Evil Dead”. So what will you get if you buy this album? Just some no-nonsense thrash songs with occasionally a death metal riff. I haven’t heard any grind core influence on this album. What I would like to advice to Spirit Disease? Try to be more original, find your own sound, variation on the guitars, drums, and vocals. The quality is there, you only have to find it yourself.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Dass Finnen was können wissen wir spätestens seit den "Kindern aus Bodom". Spirit Disease sind mindestens so schnell, haben fast so abgefahrene Solis und sind eigentlich mit der genannten Band gar nicht zu vergleichen. Ihre Musik bewegt sich irgendwo zwischen Death und Thrash Metal. Nicht zuletzt des relativ hohen Gesangs wegen, würde ich sie eher als Thrashband mit Death- und Grind Einflüssen bezeichnen. Auf der vorliegenden Mini CD finden sich sieben Stücke, wovon eines meiner Meinung nach entweder ein Fehler beim pressen der CD war, oder dann ist der Viersekundentrack mit Pause ein Joke, den ich nicht verstanden habe. Als Schlussspurt hat man sich an einen Song aus dem Hause Death gewagt und sich auch ganz ordentlich geschlagen. Das die fünf Finnen in dieser Band nicht zum ersten Mal zusammen spielen, hört man. Schon früher haben sie in verschiedenen Projekten zusammengearbeitet. Zumindest einige von ihnen. Was sie hier an Präzision an den Start legen, ist bei der heutigen Studiotechnik zwar kein so grosses Problem mehr, verdient aber trotz allem Erwähnung. Defleshed Fans können wegen der nicht zu überhörenden Ähnlichkeit getrost blind zugreifen. Alles in allem eine solide Scheibe mit gewaltigem "Kick-ass"-Potential. Lohnt sich allemal zu kaufen und vor allem lohnt es sich, die Band nicht aus den Augen, bzw. Ohren zu verlieren.

Die fünf Finnen brettern in ordentlicher GOD DETHRONED Manier durch die Botanik und hören sich alles andere als überproduziert und durchorganisiert an. Als Referenzwerk gilt also das erste GD Album auf Metal Blade. Rasende Riffs, schön heiseres Gebelle, durch und durch straightes Drumming sind die Markenzeichen von SPIRIT DISEASE und natürlich 5 kompakte Songs, plus klitzekleines Instrumental und einer göttlich, dreckigen Evil Dead Coverversion. Die fünf Tracks sind allesamt schwer brutal und gleichermaßen geil dass es nicht lohnt einen Track herauszuheben. Hier stimmt einfach alles. Vielleicht das mir der Gesang nach den vierten Genuß etwas auf die Nüsse geht aber wer hört schon ne Scheibe viermal hintereinander? Klasse Werk aus Finnland! Respekt! Geht auf die Page und macht euch selber ein Bild von SPIRIT DISEASE.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Formed in September 2002 by bassist/ backing vocalist Sallinen, this South-Finish quintet's members had the advantage of having played together in various outfits and projects in the decade preceding. Meaning they could immediately start writing material, without also having to getting to know each other. In August 2003 Evemaster singer Jarno Taskula joined the band, thus completing today's line-up of guitarists Koskinen & Riikonen, the aforementioned Sallanen, and drummer Mattila. Their first release was the on-line only "The Rehearsal Demo" (2003), and the band subsequently recorded a decent 7-track demo cdR in March of last year, of which only a small amount were made and sent out. Eventually, Hardebaran & Two Fat Men took it upon themselves to distribute the demo decently in a MCD package. The intent of the band is to return to the band member's roots, playing the brutal kind of music of the late '80s, early '90s. On top of the obvious basis of up-tempo Teuton Speed/Thrash, there's certainly also influences from Death (backing vocals), Black (lead vocals), and Grindcore Metal. The 7 tracks take up less than 18 minutes of your time, but I suspect one of the tracks was wrongly copied, and contains more than the 3 shorts riffs and equally short shout I dó hear! Anyway, with the rather high degree the songs contain, there is always a catchyness that can't be ignored, and which makes the aggressive sounds come over even more efficiently! I lóve my music this way!

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions Redemption Denied starts full-bore, leaving you with a feeling like you just did a cannonball into a frozen lake, just to get it over with. Spirit Disease's sound is exceptionally full, as well, with deep, distorted guitars that wash over you and make the overall sound easy on the ears even at high volumes. The band's style isn't just blast beats and fast-picking, though – there are frequent changes in melody and tempo, as well as several impressive guitar solos and drum fills on each track. The mini-debut moves from triumphant to sludgy to violent and back again, displaying Sprit Disease's remarkable range and ability. Even the vocals have a satisfying variety, switching between scream styles and even venturing into growls in the title track. Each song is well-written and precisely performed, leaving one with little doubt as to the skill of this new Finnish death/thrash group. Keep an eye open for a full-length album from these guys in the future; it will be a shame if we don't hear more from them.

SPIRIT DISEASE Redemption Denied Vortex Motions As all fans of Metal should know by now, Finland has its share of Metal bands. To be honest most of them don’t appeal to me, as a whole lot of them play Power Metal or other forms of Metal that I don’t care too much about. Fortunately for me SPIRIT DISEASE play a form of Metal that I can relate to, it’s a mixture of different forms of Extreme Metal such as Death, Thrash and Black Metal. The promo claims that there are some Grindcore influences to be found in the mix as well, but those influences weren’t found by me. What I found, however, was a band playing an intense form of Metal that holds good quality throughout the 17 minutes it lasts. The vocalist can be said to perform a vocal type that has more in common with Black Metal than Death Metal, though it has became fairly normal for Death Metal bands to use a more high pitched vocal form than those used by, let’s say, Chris Barnes and his fellow grunters. While I’m at it I would also like to add that Mr. Taskula does a very good performance, as it sounds like he is really putting his heart and soul into it. Although SPIRIT DISEASE are a fairly new band it’s easy to hear that the different members played their instruments long before they joined this band. With six songs in only 17 minutes (The song “Horse” lasts only 4 seconds and it sounds like something went wrong while getting it over on plastic) it’s clear that SPIRIT DISEASE cut straight to the bone, not a band for those who prefer Progressive Metal in other words. The songs on “Redemption Denied” follows the same recipe, except for the song “Evil Dead”, which is, as many probably already knew, a DEATH cover. And a good cover it is as well, my favourite song on this MCD in fact. Time will show if SPIRIT DISEASE are able to put out a full length that holds the same quality as the songs on “Redemption Denied”, I believe that their chances are good, as I find “Redemption Denied” to hold good quality. Recommended for fans of the Swedish way of making fast Metal. (Online October 26, 2005) --- Wie alle Metal-Fans inzwischen wissen, hat Finnland seinen Teil an Metal-Bands. Um ehrlich zu sein, die meisten von ihnen sprechen mich nicht an, da viele von ihnen Power Metal oder andere Formen des Metal spielen, aus denen ich mir nicht allzu viel mache. Zu meinem Glück spielen SPIRIT DISEASE eine Form des Metal, mit der ich mich identifizieren kann, es ist eine Mischung aus verschiedenen Formen des Extreme Metal, wie Death, Thrash und Black Metal. Die Promo behauptet, dass im Mix auch einige Grindcore-Einflüssezu finden wären, aber diese Einflüsse wurden von mir nicht gefunden. Was ich aber gefunden habe, war eine Band, die eine intensive Form des Metal spielt, der die 17 Minuten über, die er dauert, gute Qualität enthält. Von dem Sänger kann man sagen, dass er einen Gesangsstil darbietet, der mehr mit Black Metal als mit Death Metal gemein hat, obwohl es für Death-Metal-Bands ziemlich normal geworden ist, höhere Gesangsformen als die von, sagen wir, Chris Barnes und seinen Grunzkumpanen zu benutzen. Wo ich schon dabei bin, würde ich auch gerne hinzufügen, dass Herr Taskula eine sehr gute Performance abliefert, da er klingt, als würde er wirklich sein Herz und seine Seele hineinstecken. Obwohl SPIRITU DISEASE eine ziemlich neue Band sind, ist es leicht zu hören, dass die verschiedenen Mitglieder ihre Instrumente schon lange gespielt haben, bevor sie in diese Band kamen. Mit sechs Songs in nur 17 Minuten (der Song “Horse” dauert nur vier Sekunden, und es klingt, als wäre irgendetwas schief gelaufen, während er auf Kunststoff gebannt wurde) ist es jlar, dass SPIRITU DISEASE direkt auf den Knochen schneiden, in anderen Worten, keine Band für diejenigen, die Progressive Metal bevorzugen. Die Songs auf „Redemption Denied“ folgen demselben Rezept, bis auf den Song „Evil Dead“, der, wie viele wahrscheinlich schon wissen, ein DEATH-Cover ist. Und es ist auch ein gutes Cover, eigentlich mein Lieblingssong auf dieser MCD. Die Zeit wird zeigen, ob SPIRIT DISEASE in der Lage sind, ein Full-Length rauszubringen, das dieselbe Qualität wie die Songs auf „Redemption Denied“ enthält, ich glaube, ihre Chancen stehen gut, da ich finde, dass „Redemption Denied“ gute Qualität enthält. Empfehlenswert für Fans der schwedischen Art, schnellen Metal zu machen. (Online 26. Oktober 2005)

"Everyone Must Die" opens, leads into "Sadistic Belated Abortion," and ends a few songs later with "Evil Dead." That and the barbed logo oughtta clue ya in to the shredding mayhem here. Snakespit vocals and pummeling paces, shredding and dive-bombing solos and squeals. Get with this Two Fat Men company, cuz they seem to have their hands on debuts with potential.
